Golden Axe for the SEGA Master System is set in the fictional land of Yuria, where the evil Death Adder has kidnapped the king and his daughter and stolen the magical Golden Axe. Players choose from heroes Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, or Gilius Thunderhead to rescue the captives, defeat Death Adder, and save the land.

The game supports up to two players, with each character having unique attacks and magic.
