Scrooge McDuck tells his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie about his "Lucky Dime," the very first coin he ever earned in his vast fortune. As a birthday gift, he gives each of them a coin. However, the evil witch Magica De Spell appears and steals both the dimes and the boys, believing their luck will make her richer than Scrooge himself. Donald Duck must set out on an adventure around the world to rescue his nephews and recover the Lucky Dimes.

The game is a classic platformer where the player controls Donald. He walks left and right, can duck, jump, and swim. Enemies can be defeated by jumping on them or by using special weapons: the Hammer or Flying Disks. In the Master System version, Donald loses his weapon when hit, while the Game Gear version instead uses health points. There are also differences in stage layouts and enemy placements between the two versions.
