Vigilante is a classic arcade beat-’em-up, released by Irem in 1988 and ported to the Sega Master System the following year.
The player controls a lone vigilante battling the city gang, the Rogues, in an attempt to rescue his girlfriend Maria. The game takes place in side-scrolling streets filled with enemies, where the vigilante uses kung fu attacks like punches and kicks. Nunchaku can be picked up for extra power. Each level ends with a boss fight, after which the player moves to the end of the screen.
Movement is controlled with left/right, crouch with down, punches and kicks have different speed and range, and jumps can be combined with attacks. A health bar shows vitality, chokeholds drain health, and each level has a 90-second timer. Running out of time or health costs a life, but the game can be continued indefinitely with the score reset.
