Out Run is a pseudo-3D racing game where the player controls a Ferrari Testarossa convertible from a third-person rear perspective. The camera is positioned close to the road, simulating a Ferrari driver’s view and limiting the player’s sight into the distance. The road twists with turns, hills, and dips, increasing the challenge as upcoming obstacles like traffic can be hidden. The objective is to reach the finish line before time runs out.

The game world is divided into multiple stages, each ending with a checkpoint that adds extra time. Near the end of each stage, the road forks, allowing the player to choose between several routes leading to five different final destinations. Each destination has its own ending, such as the Ferrari breaking down or the player receiving a trophy.
